Photo of James F. Rusling, Ph.D. James F. Rusling, Ph.D.

Professor of Chemistry, UConn, Storrs campus

Professor of Cell Biology, UConn Health Center

Dr. Rusling currently serves as the Head of the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Chemistry Department. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1979 at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, and has been a faculty member at UConn ever since.

Dr. Rusling has nearly 20 years of research experience in development of bioanalytical devices and fundamental protein redox chemistry. A significant portion of his research over the past decade has focused on development of ultrasensitive, nanomaterials-based sensors for cancer biomarker proteins. He is currently focusing on methods to detect and monitor oral cancer and is the lead investigator of two multi-investigator NIH-supported projects: one involving protein immunosensor arrays for cancer detection and monitoring and new toxicity screening sensor arrays. He also heads an NSF-supported collaborative project on fundamental thin film electrochemistry of photosynthetic proteins.

Dr, Rusling is also involved in a nanoscience-based oral cancer drug deliver project in collaboration with oral cancer biologists at NIH (NIDCR). He has 35 years of experience in bioanalytical technology, and over 20 years of experience managing multi-investigator research projects. He has experience in biostatistics, and co-authored a book in 1996 on modeling and statistical analysis of biochemical data.
