Scott Kurtzman, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Kurtzman received his medical degree from the Albany Medical College of Union University. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Medicine/Dentistry in New Jersey, University Hospital. Dr. Kurtzman completed surgical oncology fellowships at both Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the National Cancer Institute Surgery Branch at the National Institutes of Health.

Research Interests

  • Dr. Kurtzman has extensive research interests. In the laboratory, he has studied the use of radio-labeled monoclonal antibodies in pancreatic cancer. He received a Department of Defense grant to examine the role of cytokines in angiogenesis in breast cancer. Dr. Kurtzman has also been an active participant in research projects involving vaccines in melanoma. In addition, Dr. Kurtzman is the Principal Investigator (PI) at the UConn Health Center for national studies conducted by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project. These studies include breast cancer prevention and treatment protocols. He is also the local PI for the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group. Dr. Kurtzman is conducting newer studies investigating novel imaging methods in breast cancer.

Interest Statement
Dr. Kurtzman has published articles on the basic biology of breast cancer and melanoma and has been the editor of a book on breast cancer imaging. In addition, Dr. Kurtzman is an expert and has published editorials on the ethical aspects of human research. He is the former chairman of the UConn Health Center Institutional Review Board. Dr. Kurtzman serves on many national committees and is the Chairman of the Training Committee of the Society of Surgical Oncology. In this capacity, he supervises the training of surgical oncology fellows throughout the country. He is in the process of setting up an accreditation process for breast fellowships.
