The Navigator Care Program is a service to help women who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

Photo of Nancy Baccaro, R.N., teaching the Navigator volunteers. The program pairs patients with trained volunteers who literally “navigate” them throughout their care. Volunteers accompany women to medical appointments, chemotherapy treatments, radiation, surgery, support groups, and more.

It is an optional program designed to complement the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center’s compassionate team of doctors, nurses, social workers and other caregivers. Our goal is to help every patient reach her full potential for recovery.

“As you travel the path of survivorship, allow us to walk with you.”

How the Program Works
Physicians with the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center recommend the Navigator program to women who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer. If patients agree, they are matched with a volunteer who will:

  • Provide practical information and assistance
  • Accompany women to appointments and procedures
  • Listen to their concerns
  • Help them access available resources within the Neag Cancer Center, the American Cancer Society and other resources throughout region.

Our Volunteers

They have undergone training to become familiar with the many services available at UConn and most importantly, to see these services through the eyes of a patient.

Message from the Director

photo of carolyn d. runowicz, m.d.Many times after a woman hears the words, “breast cancer,” she doesn’t hear anything else. Everything goes blank. She needs someone to help her through – she needs a navigator.

By providing personalized, confidential assistance to women throughout the different phases of her care, the Navigator program alleviates some of the stress and takes away some of the day-to-day burdens during this time.

No one should face breast cancer alone! We are so pleased to offer this program to women at the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center.

– Carolyn D. Runowicz, M.D.
