Free Skin Cancer Screenings on Melanoma Monday

Melanoma Screening Day Is April 24

FARMINGTON, Conn. – National Melanoma Screening Day is April 24 and the UConn Health Center is offering free skin cancer screening to individuals who have never been screened for skin cancer or have not seen a dermatologist in the past five years. UConn Health Center dermatologists are teaming up with area dermatologists to provide the free screenings on Melanoma Monday, April 24, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the dermatology offices in the Dowling South Building, lower campus. Appointments are required.

UConn Health Center dermatologist Philip Kerr, M.D., encourages people who have a family history of skin cancer, a significant risk factor of developing melanoma, to take advantage of the free screenings. He also expresses a special concern for men. "There is often a delay in the diagnosis of melanoma in men," he said. "The sooner a melanoma is discovered, the better the odds for successful treatment. Skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer, but it's also the easiest to successfully treat. Early detection is key," said Dr. Kerr.

To make an appointment, call 1-800-535-6232 or locally, 860-679-7692. Learn more about skin cancer and the dermatology services offered at the Health Center by visiting http://dermatology.uchc.edu/.
