Dr. Hanspaul S. Makkar Joins UConn Health Center

Dermatologist with Special Training in Mohs Surgery and Pediatric Dermatology

FARMINGTON, CONN. – Hanspaul S. Makkar, M.D., a dermatologist with specialized training in Mohs micrographic surgery, the most precise and effective way of removing cancerous tissue, is now seeing patients at the University of Connecticut Health Center.

Mohs surgery is the gold standard for treatment of high risk types of skin cancers, including basal cell carcinomas. Studies have shown the procedure to have a 99-percent cure rate. It is an outpatient procedure that combines the surgical removal of cancer with immediate microscopic evaluation of the tissue. It allows the Mohs surgeon to remove the entire tumor, one layer at a time, and leave healthy tissue untouched. The procedure is commonly used in areas such as the nose, eyelids and lips where maximum tissue preservation is critical for cosmetic or functional reasons.

At the UConn Health Center, Dr. Makkar works closely with dermatologist James Whalen, M.D., who is also trained in Mohs surgery. The Health Center has a modern Mohs surgical suite within its Department of Dermatology.

“We are very pleased to offer patients the expertise of two highly skilled Mohs surgeons, along with a complete range of medical, surgical and cosmetic services,” said Jane M. Grant-Kels, M.D., chair of UConn’s Department of Dermatology.

Dr. Makkar is also board certified in pediatric dermatology and offers complete care for children with dermatologic conditions, including surgical services.

“Dr. Makkar is one of only two dermatologists in the country who is board certified in dermatology, Mohs surgery and pediatric dermatology. He is a wonderful asset to our community,” Dr. Grant-Kels added.

Dr. Makkar is a graduate of Northwestern University and Northwestern University Medical School. He completed an internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School and a dermatology residency at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. He is fellowship trained in Mohs micrographic surgery and pediatric dermatology. After completing his training he worked as a dermatologist at the San Francisco Homeless Clinic and San Francisco General Hospital.
